Our position
Lawrence College wants every parent, pupil and Old Gallian to be able to use this website, whatever device they use and however they read a page. The site is built to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA, and is tested against that standard as it changes.
Last reviewed: 30 July 2026.
What has been done
- Keyboard — every menu, tab, filter, gallery, slider and form can be reached and operated without a mouse, with a visible focus ring throughout.
- Screen readers — landmarks, headings in order, descriptive link text, labelled form fields, and alternative text on photographs. Decorative images are hidden from the reading order.
- Contrast — body and heading text is checked against its background in both light and dark themes; the hover colours on the house rolls were measured and adjusted to keep names legible against every house colour.
- Text size — the site uses relative sizing and reflows down to 320 px and up to 200 % zoom without loss of content.
- Motion — if your system asks for reduced motion, animations, the hero lightning, the particle weather and the page transitions all switch off.
- High contrast — Windows High Contrast mode is supported: cards gain real borders and decorative washes are removed.
- Touch — controls meet comfortable target sizes, and form fields do not force the page to zoom on iPhone.
- Dark mode — a full dark theme, switched by the toggle or by the clock.
Known limitations
We would rather tell you where the site falls short than claim it is perfect.
- Scanned documents. The prospectus, fee schedule and the Gallian magazine are PDFs made from print files. Their text is selectable but their layout is not adapted for screen readers. Ring the college and we will supply the information in another form.
- Archive photographs. Historic images carry short descriptions, but many cannot be described in the detail a modern photograph would receive.
- Embedded services. The campus map, the Facebook feed and the YouTube player come from Google, Meta and YouTube. Their accessibility is outside the college’s control; equivalent information is available on the campus map and social pages in plain text.
- The Then & Now sliders on the history page need a drag or the arrow keys. The two photographs are also published separately in the gallery.
