A Workshop on Phonics

Reading is essential for a child’s success. Since the beginning of childhood parents and teachers start to train their children to read. All too often, the barriers faced by children, who find difficulty in reading, prove a hurdle in their desire to read and, without proper guidance; they can never overcome this hesitation.

Learning to read is a sequential process; each new skill builds on the mastery of previously learned skills. To build a strong base in reading, Jolly Phonics is a highly successful and effective method of early years. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centered approach for teaching literacy through synthetic phonics.

In order to equip our teachers at Lawrence College, with this multisensory approach we invited a professional trainer Mrs. Sadaf Asif from Islamabad. She conducted a three days’ workshop from 6th to 8th of April 2018. All the teachers of Junior School and English teachers of Prep School attended the workshop. These sessions were very colourful, interactive and lively. Our teachers lauded the new technique and the comfortable style of the resource person.

British Council held Conference

7- Mrs. Bushra Sajjad    Junior School
The Conference aimed to draw together the researchers in the field of English Language providing an interdisciplinary forum to share their findings in the field of socio-political contents of language acquisition and its impact and influence on power structures and social structures and language as means of developing social capital. Proficiency in English Language heightens the sense of self-esteem, confidence and improvement in relationships with colleagues and seniors. So highlighting the value of fluency and literacy in English Language in any organization was the sole purpose of the conference.

Workshop on Teaching of Chemistry by OUP

AIOU organized 1st National Conference on Contemporary trends in English Language and Literature from 13th to 14th of Oct, 2017. The conference aimed to draw together researchers in the field of English providing an interdisciplinary forum to facilitate presentation and exchange of recent findings in this area. It provided students, teachers and researchers of English Language with new insight into ELT providing a deeper understanding of the principles to young and adult learners. The focus of the Conference was both on theoretical and practical aspects of ELT. Eight teachers from Lawrence College attended the conference.

The two days conference started with an enlightening keynote addressed by Dr Tariq Rahman, a renowned scholar and a world-renowned linguist, in the morning of 13th of October, 2017. His lecture covered the history of development of English language in the Subcontinent and the change in the conduct of the Britishers themselves. Following his address, the morning session continued with lectures by prominent linguists of the country including Dr Raja Naseem Akhtar, Dr Munaza Yaqoob, Dr Bushra Ahmed Khurram, Dr Nadeem Haider and Dr Safeer Awan. The learned scholars dilated upon different aspects of language learning, teaching strategies and recent trends in English literature.

The evening session contained presentation on different aspects of language teaching. The presenters presented their research works giving solutions to some of the common problems the teachers and students face in a second language classroom. These sessions were highly useful for the participants as they highlighted some of the neglected areas and the teachers could review their methods and strategies in accordance with the research work presented there.

The next day’s sessions also contained a variety of topics which were followed by interesting question/answer sessions. Dr Shahid Siddiqui, the Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University, in his closing address stressed upon the importance of such conferences and said that AIOU would continue holding such conferences.

The workshop was highly useful for all the participants as it provided them an opportunity to listen to experienced professors of English language. It will surely help the teachers in planning English lessons differently and concentrate on some of the modern trends in language teaching.
